ELECTIONS IN TURKEY 2

It is being discussed that the presidential and general elections to be held on June 18, 2023 could be held on May 14.

The general election is one year away. Opposition parties want an early election, while the government says these discussions are over with the election arrangement. Because a year has to pass before the new election law can be implemented.

On the other hand, the opposition has also opened a debate on whether President Tayyip Erdogan can run for president for a third time. In order to overcome this, elections need to be held early (before due date which is June 2023)

According to media, proposals for holding general elections have been discussed in political lobbies for some time. It was learned that those who expressed this opinion in the AKP administration also conveyed their ideas to President Tayyip Erdogan, and it was decided to evaluate it in all aspects. While a final decision has not yet been made on this issue, it is suggested that this option is gaining weight.

As for the five-week date, before official date in June, attention is drawn to the exams that will continue throughout June.

Another reason is cited as the second round of the presidential election. It is stated that if the election to be held on June 18 falls on the second round, it will be held on July 2, which will coincide with the holiday period and the period when the producers (farmers/ citizens) will be busy in the field.
