NASAL VACCINE AGAINST COVID 19

The vaccine developed in the form of spray against coronavirus (Covid-19) was successful in animal experiments. The “nasal vaccine” prevents infection and transmission, scientists said.

Scientists working on a joint study conducted at the Universities of Georgia and Iowa in the United States concluded that the nasal-administered coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine showed effective immunity and zero virus spread.

According to the Financial Express, a finding was reached that this vaccine had 100 percent effectiveness in terms of immunity and spread.

Single dose vaccine

On the other hand, according to animal experiments, a single dose nasal vaccine has the effectiveness of preventing the formation and transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) virus.

Targeting mucosal cells

The “nasal vaccine” targets mucosal cells lining the inhaling canals which are the main entry and breeding point for coronavirus. In the vaccine, the immune response is activated by using the parainfluenza 5 virus (PIV5) to transmit the spike protein to cells.

After the vaccine, which was also implemented on mice, it was observed that mice developed antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and produced a local immune response that included cellular immunity.

The researchers also noted that the vaccine prevents infection and disease in ferrets, and that the disease is not transmitted to animals in the same cage.

Catching the virus in the upper respiratory tract

“This mucosal vaccine inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication in the upper respiratory tract, preventing the disease from progressing to the lower respiratory tract,” the study results, published in the journal Science Advances, said.

Even kept in the refrigerator

The fact that the vaccine, administered only as a single dose, can be stored at normal refrigerator temperature for up to 3 months is also considered a great improvement in storage.

Epidemic could be brought under control

“Current vaccines are very successful against Covid-19, but the majority of the world’s population still hasn’t been vaccinated,” said Professor Paul McCray of the University of Georgia, USA, noting that more people can be protected thanks to easier-to-use vaccines. More vaccines are needed, which are easy to use and are effective in stopping both disease and transmission. If this new Covid-19 vaccine proves effective in humans, it will be easier to control the pandemic,” he said.
