PORCELAIN BOWL SOLD

A porcelain bowl made in China in the mid-1700s was sold for 25 million 300 thousand dollars.

The 11.5 cm diameter bowl, described as ‘very important‘ by Sotheby’s auction house, is one of the rare porcelain of the ‘phalancai‘ type that came out of the imperial furnaces and was painted by artisans in the Forbidden City in Beijing.

The bowl, which was sold for $ 25.3 million (about 488 million pounds) at an auction in Hong Kong, shows a depiction of two swallows, a blooming apricot and a willow tree.

Art history expert Regina Krahl describes the bowl in the auction catalog as ‘the pinnacle of painting on porcelain‘.

The other of the bowls, which were made in pairs but separated from each other in 1929, is on display at the British Museum in London.
