QUORA Q: Why does President Erdogan get involved in internal affairs of other countries?

Tayyip ERDOGAN has chosen “powerful leader” profile for years. In Turkey, he has come to this day, especially by using the element of religion and making maximum use of the propaganda mechanism. He usually bases his propaganda on 4 main factors:

1) He claims to have broken chains to limit Islam in Turkey (to include lifting all bans on Turban). The President has been using this argument for much over a decade now as if he was the one to bring Islam back to Turkey again – which is definitely not true, as Turks already knew their religion and could perform as need be.
2) The President also bases his party’s performance on their success in building infrastructure and mainly roads
3) AK Party governments have made some reforms in areas such as Social Security services etc.
4) Last but not the least this administration has also increased total volume of exports substantially.

However due to huge corruption mainly (without going to details) – as reported by several sources so far – and wrong investment decisions as well as inappropriate allocation of budget mainly, Turkey has unluckily lost altitude in economy mainly and today many experts in the country cannot see a reason why they should be optimist about the future of economy.

In addition to above, the President has started to put his plan regarding his ideology – to establish Islam much more powerfully in the country and applying a strong pressure on the media which criticizes his administration to the extent of having many journalist jailed.

As would be understood from above content not much has been going well in the country –as voiced by opposition, experts and millions of voters. Experts comment that the President – being aware of developments and shortcoming as well as low performance – prefers to consolidate and lock his population of voters to stay in power . To do this he bases his arguments on above and also he wants to adopt the image of “how strong a leader he is” and a world leader as often voiced by his supporters. This way he tries to make up for the popularity or approval lost due to low performance in economy and motivate his supporters. Obviously all above has worked well so far.

Apart from this there have been other issues concerning Turkey’s benefits such as the one in Mediterranean and the terror organization located in Syria etc. However, interventions provided by the government have usually been issues of criticism as well in terms of timing and the depth of involving etc.

All in all, even if done on fair grounds the President does not miss the opportunity of using such interventions to strengthen his position in the eyes of his supporters by addressing patriotic feelings.
