MEETING SAUDI ARABIA FOR UKRAINE

It is stated that Ukraine is seeking to attract neutral countries such as China and India to its side for peace by taking advantage of Saudi Arabia’s “increasing weight in the international arena”. The negotiations initiated with the initiative of Ukraine to determine the basic principles of a future peace agreement have started in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Russia was not invited to the two-day meeting, which was attended by representatives of more than 40 countries, including the United States, China and India. However, in an environment where the possibility of direct peace talks does not appear on the horizon, Moscow has reported that it will closely follow the talks.

Western diplomats pointed out that Saudi Arabia had maintained contacts with both sides since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year and the world’s largest oil exporter, had played an important role in bringing together countries that did not participate in previous meetings.

WHAT DOES UKRAINE EXPECT?

With this important diplomatic initiative, Ukraine aims to reach out to countries that are reluctant to take sides in the Ukraine-Russia war, which has dealt a blow to the global economy, beyond its western allies who support it.

Zelenskiy hopes the talks pave the way for a peace summit where global leaders unite on Ukraine’s plan. Ukraine demands that Russia return all the territories it has occupied and completely withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory.

CHINA AND INDIA

China, which did not participate in the peace talks held in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, in June, sent Li Hui, its special representative for Eurasian Affairs, to the meeting in Jeddah.

Li Hui said, “We have many disagreements and we have heard different positions, but the important thing is that our principles are shared.”
