EU WILL FINE TIKTOK

The EU has paved the way for TikTok to be fined a significant amount for violating children’s privacy. The sentence, which is expected to reach millions of pounds, will be announced in 4 weeks. The European Union (EU) has paved the way for the Chinese social media platform TikTok to be fined a significant amount for violating the privacy of children.

The EU Data Protection Board has announced its opinion on the investigation launched in 2021 by the Data Protection Authority of Ireland, where the platform is headquartered, regarding TikTok’s protection of the data of users aged 13-17 on the grounds that it did not comply with the decision.

The Board justified the Irish Data Protection Authority in its binding decision, allowing TikTok to be fined.

THE PENALTY COULD AMOUNT TO MILLIONS OF POUNDS

The sentence, which is expected to reach millions of pounds, will be announced in 4 weeks.

The EU Commission had announced in April that it would apply strict rules to major digital platforms and search engines operating in Europe in accordance with the Digital Services Act (DSA). Alibaba, Amazon, Apple AppStore, Booking.com , Facebook, Google Play, Google Maps, Google Shopping, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube and Zalando were announced to be included in this classification.

Within the scope of the DSA, the designated platforms must comply with the rules such as limiting disinformation, quickly removing illegal content, better protecting minors on the Internet, conducting risk assessments, taking steps to reduce risks and being subject to external supervision.
