Statement from IYI Party leader Meral Akşener: Reason for this mess is “one-man regime”

IYI Party Chairman Meral Akşener cited the one-man regime as the main reason for the chaos observed after the earthquakes. AKSENER first went to Kahramanmaraş in the evening. She went to the field on the fourth day of the earthquake. The GOOD Party leader visited the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş, the epicenter of the first earthquake.

Aksener said that party officials had been on the ground since the beginning of the earthquake and had passed the information to her. Stating that an earthquake coordination center had been established in the GOOD Party and they had been in communication AFAD and non-governmental organizations, Akşener said the following:

“I CALLED PRESIDENT ERDOGAN”

“I called Mr. (President Tayyip) Erdogan. I gave this information (that heating is a problem).  was requested gas tubes for warming up. There is a heating system, I asked for it to be sent. He said he had given instructions, personally.”

“On the first day of the earthquake, I had said, “It’s time for us to shut up, it’s time for our government to talk, and it’s time for politics to shut up,” and we complied with this. Now I am here today, and now it’s time to hear the voice of our nation and reflect it to the public opinion, it’s time to see the shortcomings, announce it and ensure its provision. I did not come on purpose for the first three days because I had the experience of this (Gölcük earthquake) so that I would not interfere with the work. But you’ll see, I’m never leaving here. There is a seasonal difference between that earthquake and this earthquake. The first 72 hours are for critical search-and-rescue work. We didn’t want to be in the way and interfere with the work. I arrived today and I saw that there were many glitches. The number of people working at AFAD is limited. Their experience in distributing aid is limited.”

“MAIN PROBLEM IS ONE-MAN SYSTEM”

“The main problem of this mess today is the “one-man system”. It is the disappearance of memory. The memory of the state of this country is gone. I invite Erdogan to be serious, inclusive and to work with meritorious staff.

Today is not the place and time to do politics. Ömer Çelik (AK Party spokesperson) says ‘The Republic alliance is here, where is the Nation’s alliance (meaning opposition). Today is not the time to talk about these things, to do politics.

The most important issue is heating. There are no medicines, no antibiotics, no diapers and no food. The situation of women is very bad. There is no toilet. Housing is a problem, there are no tents. Access to food has been provided and there is no problem with it now. We brought medicines, antibiotics with us.”
