VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

In the Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI) report prepared by the United Nations (UN) Development Program (UNDP), it was noted that three quarters of the people in Turkey considered it legitimate for men to beat their wives.

According to the report, half of the people in the world still think that men are better political leaders than women, and more than 40 percent think that men are better managers in the business world.

25 PERCENT OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD BELIEVE IT’S LEGITIMATE FOR MEN TO BEAT WIFES

According to Emre Bal from BBC Turkish, a striking finding in the report is that 25 percent of people believe that it is legitimate for men to beat their wives. This rate is more than 75 percent in Turkey.

The UNDP report emphasizes that such biases are the driving force of the obstacles faced by women. It is noted that this situation has caused movements against gender equality to gain momentum in many regions of the world and an increase in human rights violations in some countries.

EXTREMELY LOW REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

According to the report, biases are seen in the extremely low representation of women in leadership positions. It is stated that the average proportion of women who have become heads of state and government since 1995 has remained around 10 percent, while the proportion of female managers in the employment market is only one-third.

The report also draws attention to the worsening link between women’s progress in education and their economic empowerment. Although women are now more educated than ever before, and even in 59 countries women are better educated compared to men, the wage gap is 39 percent in favor of men.
