The main opposition leader Alexis Tsipras, who suffered a heavy defeat in the recent general elections in Greece, has resigned as the leader of the party. According to the results of the second round, the party of current prime minister Kiryakos Mikotakis, the New Democracy Party, had won 158 seats in parliament with 40.56 percent of the vote.

General elections were held in Greece in May, but no party could reach a majority to form a government alone. Thereafter, the second round of the general elections were held four days ago.
