MUCILAGE PROBLEM IN MARMARA SEA

The problem of mucilage in the Sea of Marmara will be investigated in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. It was decided by unanimity of all political parties to establish a mucilage commission to work on the issue.

A Parliamentary Research Commission was established to determine the measures to be taken by investigating the causes of the mucilage (sea saliva) problem arising in the sea of Marmara.

AK Party, CHP, HDP, MHP and Good Party groups, merged and discussed research proposals by suggested by several deputies from different parties. Deputies emphasized that mucilage which is pollution of the sea, was an environmental disaster created by humans

They also noted that industrial facilities and household waste discharged into the Marmara Sea should be identified and comprehensive inventory should be taken out in the Geographic Information System adding “all kinds of pollution caused by marine vehicles should be controlled. The method of cleaning should not be decided without the opinions of scientists. Mobilization should be declared before the death of the Sea of Marmara”.

A deputy from Good Party said that the Sea of Marmara could be cleared with 2.5 percent of the money to be spent on Canal Istanbul. Another deputy from AK Party on the other hand emphasized that the problem of mucilage in the Sea of Marmara appeared dramatically and pointed to the historical and global perspective of the issue.

He said “one side of modernization is progress and development whereas the other side is the ecological, global problems facing humanity today. Clues have yet to emerge. If we go with such collective indiscretion, we will see disasters coming.”
