Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announces Turkey’s tourism income for third quarter 2023

According to the data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute, tourism income for the third quarter of 2023, covering the months of July, August, and September, increased by 13.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 20.225 billion dollars. 16.5% of tourism income was generated by foreign nationals visiting Turkey.

Package tour expenditures amounted to 5.5 billion dollars

Visitors organize their travels either personally or through package tours. In this quarter, personal expenditures accounted for 14.644 billion dollars, while package tour expenditures amounted to 5.580 billion dollars.

The number of visitors increased by 6.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year

The number of visitors departing from Turkey in the third quarter of 2023 increased by 6.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 22.428 million people. Foreign nationals residing abroad made up 12% of the visitors, totaling 2.687 million people.

During this quarter, the average nightly expenditure of visitors departing from Turkey was 103 dollars, while the average nightly expenditure of foreign nationals residing abroad was 74 dollars.

Spending on sports, education and culture increases by 33 percent

In this quarter, compared to the same quarter of the previous year, spending on sports, education, and culture increased by 33.3%, accommodation spending increased by 26.1%, and food and beverage spending increased by 24.6%, while spending on tourism services decreased by 1.6%.

76.2 percent came to Turkey for “sightseeing and cultural activities”

In this quarter, visitors mostly came to Turkey for “sightseeing, entertainment, sports, and cultural activities” at 76.2%.

Secondly, with 16.6%, there was “visiting relatives and friends,” and thirdly, with 3%, there was “shopping.” Foreign nationals residing abroad mostly came to Turkey for “visiting relatives and friends,” at 61.2%.
