Veteran journalist says AK Party facing three major challenges currently

At a time when discussions about Hagia Sophia seem to be number one issue on Turkey’s agenda (as would be favored by the administration certainly) Murat YETKIN, a veteran journalist has written that ruling AK Party is facing 3 other major issues at present.

According to Mr. YETKIN, these are

1-Growing coronavirus concern as opening of schools nears
2-The Silent women’s revolt that has started with the Istanbul Convention debate
3-Failure to achieve the expected improvement in the economic and financial area.

And the journalist argues how these issues might affect the AK Party’s voting potential.

Apparently, despite the data shared by official authorities the economic picture is not welcome by majority of citizens. The reason is it is real easy to tell the inflation is well above the figures declared by the administration simply looking at what people can take home to their kitchens. It goes without saying this will be the factor with the highest impact on preferences of people at the time of voting.

On the other hand, “the Istanbul Convention” issue which women across the whole country consider as vital for their protection against male violence seems to cause AK Party to lose further support – in case the government withdraws from said convention.

And last but not least, in case covid-19 causes unwanted results after schools are opened, it is most certain that this would be another blow to AK Party’s position.

All in all, it seems the ruling party might further continue to lose support which would not bring along favorable results for it in the elections to come. Turkey is destined to experience very interesting times in the coming months.
