VETS GO ON STRIKE IN TURKEY

Veterinary doctors across Turkey went on a one-day strike. A press statement was held in front of the Ulus Atatürk Monument in Ankara, and a significant number of veterinary doctors participated.

Following the death of a cat undergoing infection treatment on August 3rd at a veterinary clinic in Çankaya district, veterinary doctor Ceren Eroğlu was assaulted by four individuals. The Turkish Veterinary Medical Association and 56 veterinary medical chambers organized a one-day strike to draw attention to the incidents of violence.

NO TO VIOLENCE IN HEALTHCARE

At the press statement held in front of the Ulus Atatürk Monument in Ankara, Turkish Veterinary Medical Association Central Council President Prof. Dr. Murat Arslan, Veterinary Doctors Association Board Member Nüket Bilgen, Turkish Medical Association General Secretary Vedat Bulut, Ankara Veterinary Doctors Chamber President Ahmet Baydın, and many veterinary doctors participated. The group carried signs with slogans such as “No to Violence in Healthcare” and “Protect Veterinary Doctors for a Healthy Society,” and they expressed their demands.

“VETERINARIANS SHOULD BE INCLUDED UNDER THE VIOLENCE LAW”

Speaking on behalf of the group, Turkish Veterinary Medical Association Central Council President Arslan stated that incidents of violence had discouraged them. Arslan said, “Our colleagues are giving up their professions with great hopes, and especially young colleagues are seeking their futures abroad. Veterinary doctors are defined under the ‘Civil Servants Law No. 657’ in the category of healthcare services. Without delay, the necessary steps should be taken; all veterinary doctors who protect public health with the services they provide, regardless of their field in veterinary medicine, should be included under the ‘Violence in Healthcare Law’,” he said.
