Sweden has moved a significant step forward in its bid to join NATO, as the Turkish Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee granted approval on Tuesday. This marks an essential initial stage before the proposal undergoes a comprehensive vote in the full parliament.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had been hesitating in endorsing Sweden’s NATO accession, recently acknowledged a connection between Turkey’s delay and the United States’ reluctance to sell F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits to Ankara.

The Turkish Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee opted to proceed with the vote following an uncommon telephone conversation between Erdogan and US President Joe Biden earlier this month, during which the topic of NATO expansion was extensively discussed.

The general opinion in the country is that Turkey will finally lift its veto on this issue, paving the way for Sweden’s Nato membership
