TURKISH TOURISTS TRAVEL LESS DURING EPIDEMIC

Overshadowed by the pandemic, the total number of trips in 2020 went down to 42 million 847 thousand corresponding to a decrease of 45.2 percent compared to the previous year. In the fourth quarter, the total number of trips dropped to 7 million 189 thousand trips displaying a decrease of 44 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

According to the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the total number of overnight stays made by travelers during this period decreased by 26.4 percent to 469 million 91 thousand and the average number of overnight stays was 109 nights.

In 2020, total travel expenditures in domestic travel decreased by 34.1 percent to 32 billion 250 million 278 thousand Turkish liras.

94.2 percent of these expenditures amounting to TL 30 billion 369 million 370 thousand was personal expenses and 5.8 percent was package tour expenses with 1 billion 880 million 908 thousand TL. The average spent amount per trip was TL 753.

“Visiting relatives “took the first place with 65.7 percent while ”sightseeing, entertainment, Vacation “took the second place with 25 percent and ”health” took the third place with 4.2 percent.

When the types of accommodation are evaluated annually, travelers stayed the most “in the House of friends or relatives” with the number of overnight stays of 311 million 562 thousand. “Own house” took place in second place with 112 million 748 thousand overnights while “hotel” took third place with 18 million 878 thousand overnights.
