Construction activities have resumed for Cengiz Holding’s hotel and timeshare project in Cennet Koyu. Officials stated that construction work on the hotel recommenced after the end of the tourism season in the designated “Protection and Controlled Area.”

Construction work has accelerated for Cengiz Holding’s hotel and timeshare project in Cennet Koyu (Bay), located in Muğla-Bodrum. Bahattin Demir, the Co-Spokesperson for the Bodrum Council of the Muğla Environmental Platform, stated that construction work on the hotel had resumed after the end of the tourism season in the area declared as a “Natural Site-Sustainable Protection and Controlled Area.”

According to a report by Şeyda Öztürk from Cumhuriyet, Demir expressed concerns about the area, mentioning, “This is both a natural and archaeological site. Cennet Koyu (bay) is on the verge of turning into hell. They are even dumping excavation waste into the ‘Gölkoy Wetland Area.’ Destruction has started in an area that should not be touched, which is both a natural and archaeological site, and where vegetable farming is carried out just below.”

Cengiz Holding, owned by Mehmet Cengiz (one of the 5 favored companies by the management) had started the hotel project in Cennet Koyu in October 2022. Despite objections from citizens and environmental advocates, the project received a decision in December 2022 stating that “Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is not necessary.” Bodrum Municipality canceled the permit granted to the company. However, Cengiz Construction, which purchased the 678,000 square meter land from the Privatization Administration, took the matter to court. The Administrative Court of Muğla issued a stay of execution for the permit cancellation.

After the decision, a temporary construction site was established for the project consisting of 101 apartment rooms and 83 suites, totaling 184 rooms. However, work was paused due to the tourism season. As the season came to an end, Cengiz Construction decided to expand the project. The company applied to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, requesting permission to increase the number of units to 186 in the project valued at 658 million 436 thousand TL.
