As the corona virus continues to take lives around the world, a fear of mutation also prevails. While the world anxiously monitors the situation in Britain, one wonders whether the approved vaccines are found effective against the mutation.

After the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved by the American food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Drug Agency (EMA), there was an important development related to the Chinese vaccine Coronavac which Turkey is also said to have bought 50 million doses.

The China-based company Sinovac Biotech which makes the vaccine, was conducting third-stage tests in Turkey, Indonesia and Brazil. The first results came from tests in Brazil. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported last week that the third-stage tests had been completed, while the vaccine had passed the 50 percent effectiveness threshold.

Professor Dr. Domingos Alves (at Ribeirão Preto Medical School) noted that he expected the vaccine to become comparable to other vaccines, which are said to have up to 95 percent effectiveness and went on to say “everyone hopes that the vaccine’s effectiveness rate will be above 90 percent. The results in the early stages were very good.”
