Turkish contracting companies have reached a total turnover of 161 billion dollars with over 5000 projects in 30 years. Turkish contractors have 5 % share within the total business volume of the global contracting business.
Turkey’s international contracting activities which started with housing constructions in 1970s expanded towards transportation, energy and irrigation fields during 1980s. A substantial portion of the construction materials and machinery used at works contracted during this period were provided from abroad and there was a need for international engineering support.
By 1990s Turkish enngineering industry had acquired not only capital but also experience and engineering aas well as a well-trained man power.
It thus started to undertake large-scale projects with higher added value such as construction of subways, industrial plants, natural gas-oil refineries, motorways power plants and developed industrial plans which required high technological hardware and know-how. The industry owned high capacity and highly developed machinery largely supplied from Turkey. Then came prestigious contracting works like hospitals, airports, hotels, offices, company headquarters and commercial centers during 2000s.
There are 33 Turkish companies in the top 225 international contracting companies worldwide.
Turkey comes second after China in the list of countries with the highest number of int’l engineering companies.
The number of projects undertaken between 1972 and 2010 is 5010i with a total business volume of 161 billion dollars
The industry is involved with projects across 81 countries worldwide.
The industry is expected to reach a business volume of 50 billion dollars in 5 years. The stable initiatives of the Turkish government is supposed to contribute highly on the way to achieving this target.
