F-16 step from USA: approval for sale of Link-16 modernization kits to Turkey

The US State Department has approved the sale of modernization kits of the Link-16 tactical data link (TDL) system, also known as the “multiple information distribution system” to Turkey to modernize the communication capability of existing F-16 fighter jets.

Sources reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially communicated to the Congress its decision on the sale of modernization kits for the Link-16 tactical data link network, the communication system of F-16 fighter jets.

The Defense and Security Cooperation Agency, which notified Congress of the official US arms sales decision, has not yet made an official statement, but according to information obtained by Turkish media, the sales package includes related equipment and engineering support, as well as Automatic Anti-Collision Systems to upgrade the Link-16 tactical data link system of existing F-16s to the “Block Upgrade-2” level.

The US Congress has the right to object to the Ministry’s decision within 15 business days for sales approvals to NATO members and 30 business days to non-NATO countries.

WHAT IS LINK-16 TACTICAL DATA LINK (TDL) SYSTEM?

Link-16 is a military radio network, also known as tactical data link (TDL), and is used by NATO and allied countries. This network provides tactical information sharing between aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), ships and troops. Link-16 is known for its features such as high-speed data transfer, automatic data refresh, dynamic routing and wide coverage area. This capability offers a range of communication modes that can be used in air defense, air attack, naval warfare and other tactical operations.
