Food basket, filled for 100 TL last summer is filled for 276 TL this year

Food prices which went up by 6 percent month-on-month in July, rose by 175.9 percent year-on-year, according to PUBLIC-RESEARCH data from the R&D unit of the United Public-Business Confederation.

Although it is summer, the rise in food prices have continued in full swing in July. Food prices which increased by 6 percent compared to the previous month, went up by 85.3 percent in the first 7-month period of the year. They went up by 175.9 percent in 12 months period.

A food basket made up of the same products cost 100 TL last year and the same basket full of products can be bought for 275.9 TL this year.

 “The increase caused by incorrect economic and agricultural policies in food prices is gradually increasing the risk of hunger in Turkey,” a written statement from KAMU-AR said, and continued:

“Price increases make access to food difficult for citizens and oblige them to eat poorly and unhealthily. Experts note that this situation brings about the risk of causing significant health problems in the future, especially for the younger generation.”
