President Erdogan announces that social media regulation is on the way

President ERDOGAN has made important explanations about social media and steps the government intends to take. The President said, “This kind of media does not suit this nation, this country. We want this kind of social media to be completely removed and controlled.

Once the legal arrangement is complete, we will introduce all kinds of methods including access barriers and judicial and financial sanctions. Those who use the internet media are not “unquestionable” about committing crimes”.

ERDOGAN went on to say,

“Do you understand why we are against social media like YouTube Twitter Netflix? to eliminate such immorality. Social media needs to be streamlined. We want these channels checked. Turkey is not a banana republic. We will bring our proposal on this issue to Parliament.

It should not be forgotten that all individuals of our country can live what happened to my family. No one can be stripped of his right to protect his honor. Anything that is a crime when it is committed against a person’s face should face the same result when it is done in the media and social media.

Those who use the internet media are not untouchable about committing crimes.  Rights to legal remedies and to take precaution in all areas deemed crime by law such as sexual abuse, obscenity, gambling, fraud, incitement to crime, terrorist propaganda and defamation should be made available and accessible

Our responsibilities to our nation require establishing and operating the necessary mechanisms in this direction. We cannot accept the fact that 83 million Turkish citizens are bound by social media terror while Americans, Europeans and Chinese have this opportunity. We are working on a comprehensive legal arrangement on this issue. We are determined to do whatever is necessary for the internet and social media to establish legal and financial interlocutions in our country as soon as possible.”

The main issue we need to focus on is how the media, and especially the social media have become such a tool of corruption. It is imperative that these channels are put in order where the attacks on the personal rights of the slander and the reputational assassinations are practiced. This is not the kind of media that suits this nation, this country. We want to bring it to our Parliament and ask our Parliament to control the complete removal of such social media. Global companies that control social media assume all financial responsibility for the content abroad and avoid it in Turkey. We are determined to do whatever it takes for them to establish financial interlocutors.”
