The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) is set to release asylum application data for the previous month on November 8. However, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper has obtained access to the data ahead of the official release. Turkish citizens have reportedly surpassed Syrians and Afghans in seeking asylum in Germany, claiming the top position.

According to DW Türkçe’s report, in October 2023, Turkish citizens have risen to the top of the asylum statistics with over 9,000 applications, surpassing Syrians and Afghans after nearly a decade. Syrians had consistently held the leading position in asylum applications to Germany since 2014.

As of September, the number of asylum applications from Turkish citizens in Germany was reported to be 35,283. This represents an increase of over 204% compared to the same period last year.

The European Statistical Office (Eurostat) also announced that the number of first-time asylum seekers from Turkish citizens in European Union (EU) countries had reached an all-time record.
