Turkey’s government discusses date for 2023 deputy and presidential elections

After the Kahramanmaraş-based earthquakes, the AK Party (ruling) Central Board of Directors meeting was convened the previous day. The main agenda of the meeting, which lasted about 6 hours at the party headquarters, was the earthquake. Important decisions were made at the meeting. Another important agenda item of the meeting was the election. It is claimed that President Erdogan is in favor of holding the elections on time and some party members want June 18.

Some sources claim that another topic of the meeting at the AKP FMC was the Presidential and parliamentary elections, which were previously announced to be held on May 14. At the meeting, which was also attended by members of the AKP’s Supreme Election Board (YSK), it was stated that Erdogan wanted to have information about what stage the YSK’s (Election Board) preparations for the elections were at.

During the meeting, it was stated that “postponement of the elections was not considered, and if postponed, there would be a possibility that the Republic’s Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı / bloc in power) would lose the elections. It is stated that Erdogan would make the final decision. In the meeting it was underlined that the elections should be held no later than June 18 and it is pointed out that President Erdogan met with MHP Leader Devlet Bahceli, a partner of the People’s Alliance, yesterday after the meeting.
