As Turkey becomes the global capital of cosmetic tourism with the depreciation of the Turkish Lira, the UK is discussing deaths occurring in aesthetic surgeries in Turkey. In the forensic report prepared by British authorities for Melissa Kerr, who died during a hip enlargement surgery in 2019, negligence on the part of Turkish doctors was alleged.”

British authorities will meet with their counterparts in Turkey following the death of a 31-year-old psychologist, Melissa Kerr, during a hip enlargement operation at Istanbul Medicana Hospital in 2019. The investigation concluded that doctors did not provide Kerr with sufficient information about the risks and mortality rate of the surgery. According to a report from British health officials, the injected fat caused a blockage in the pulmonary artery by entering the bloodstream.

As part of the investigation, a series of messages were presented as evidence, where Kerr told a hospital employee that she felt ‘a bit tense’ before traveling to Turkey. Additionally, it was revealed that Kerr had asked to see photos of previous patients multiple times, but these were not shown.

EXPERTS SHARE CONCERN ABOUT TRAVELS TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES FOR AESTHETIC SURGERY

Senior forensic pathologist Jacqueline Lake wrote a letter to the UK Health Secretary expressing concerns about people traveling to foreign countries for aesthetic surgery. According to The Guardian, Health Minister Maria Caulfield, in a written response to Lake, confirmed that British officials would travel to Turkey to meet with their counterparts: “The aim is to discuss existing protections for UK citizens and identify concrete areas where we need to work with Turkish authorities to reduce risks for future patients.”

The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), known as hip enlargement surgery, carries a risk of death 10 times higher than other cosmetic procedures. Therefore, it has the highest mortality rate among all aesthetic procedures.”
