Repeated warnings have been issued to citizens to be cautious and take precautions due to expected heavy rainfall in Istanbul starting from tonight. A post on Istanbul Governorate’s social media account stated that according to the evaluations of the Turkish State Meteorological Service, local heavy and occasionally very heavy (30-70kg/m2) thunderstorms with rainfall were expected in Istanbul starting from tonight.

The post advised citizens to be cautious and take precautions against sudden floods, waterlogging, lightning, and other adverse effects.

AKOM ALSO WARNS

According to a statement from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM), western regions of Turkey including Istanbul will be affected by a low-pressure system coming from the central Mediterranean.

It is expected that the winds, coming from the north (known as “poyraz” in Turkish), will intermittently blow in the form of storms at speeds of 40-65 kilometers per hour, intensifying the effect of the rains.

CLEARING UP BY SUNDAY

The cold and rainy weather is expected to diminish by late Saturday, and it is forecasted to clear up by Sunday.

Temperatures, which have currently dropped to the range of 12-14 degrees Celsius, are expected to rise again above 20 degrees Celsius.
