The medical world has focused on the treatment of COVID-19, which is caused by the corona virus. Good news came from Germany, the United States and Denmark. The first results of the Ebola drug Remdesivir which was given to Corona patients in intensive care at 50 hospitals around the world (mainly in Germany) where other treatments did not benefit, were announced. This issue is now widely featured in the European press and in medical-related publications.

According to scientific research published by the New England Journal of Medicine in the UK, more than two-thirds of patients in intensive care fully recovered after they were given the drug Remdesivir, which is used to treat EBOLA.

Remdesivir, which surrounds the corona virus and isolates it, has been applied to 800 severe patients worldwide, mainly in Germany and Denmark, since January 25th. Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles shared results on a total of 53 patients, 2 of whom were from Germany.

All patients were positive for SARS-CoV-2 in intensive care, intubated or in severe condition. A portion of these patients were receiving intensive oxygen therapy and were able to breathe mechanically.

The individual characteristics and conditions of the patients were featured in the German publication Aerzteblatt. Three in 4 of the patients were male and one in 3 were over the age of 70. At the same time, two-thirds of patients had accompanying diseases such as high blood pressure (25 percent, 17 percent diabetes), hyperlipidemia (11 percent) and/or asthma (11 percent).

The patients were treated as in the PALM study in Ebola patients: after an intravenous initial dose of 200 mg Remdesivir, they were infused with 100 mg Remdesivir per day.

After treatment, the condition of 36 out of 53 patients (68 percent) improved 18 days after the first dose. However, 7 patients (13 per cent) died, while eight patients (15 per cent) suffered further deterioration.

Among the patients who recovered were 12 patients also who did not need respiratory support at the start of treatment. Of the 7 patients who were noninvasively ventilated, 5 were also in recovery. On the other hand seven patients at the clinic (13 per cent) lost their lives despite all efforts .
