Known as the historical peninsula of Istanbul in the district of Fatih district, SULTANAHMET is one of the most fashionable and popular spots for both domestic and foreign visitors with its historical architecture, art and cultural events, shopping and entertainment centers. It is full of attractions very much favored by tourists visiting Istanbul and thus deserves the label of most frequently visited destination in this magnificent city with lively streets and so much going on.

SULTANAHMET has also always been a popular meeting point. It was named after Sultan Ahmet the first and served as the center of administration and life of the Ottoman Empire. It can also be referred to as the historical heart and center of Istanbul. On the other hand, SULTANAHMET is also the first hill of Istanbul which is known to be located on seven hills.

Among spots of top interest in the region are following: TOPKAPI Palace, HAGIA SOPHIA Mosque, BLUE MOSQUE, PYRAMID, fountain and columns in the square, Museum of Turkish and Islamic works, Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Grand Palace Mosaics Museum, BASILICA Cistern.

As SULTANAHMET Square (Hippodrome) and its immediate surroundings are closed to vehicle traffic, and the attractions located here are very close to each other, one can easily walk all over the area very comfortably. In case it would be necessary to go to Eminönü and Beyazıt neighborhoods, it is possible to use the tram.

Sultanahmet keeps growing and expanding day by day, taking on a more colorful ambiance. Even the old houses in the alleyways are restored and painted and the ones newly built preserve the old architectural style. At places one would not expect such as in narrow streets, it is possible to stumble across boutique hostels, unique small restaurants.

On the other hand, the area also hosts souvenir shops and bazaars where one can find a summary of Turkey and its arts & culture. Talking about SULTANAHMET, it would not be fair not to refer the ARASTA Bazaar located on the sea side of the Blue Mosque, with plenty of touristic shops. One can also visit the Mosaic Museum in the bazaar, and the Carpet Museum, which is nearby. In short, this area is both a treasure of history and a paradise of souvenirs.

EATING AT SULTANAHMET

For those already hungry after a long walk around the best eating place to go to would certainly be the famous (and historical) “Tarihi SULTANAHMET KÖFTECİSİ” (Selim Usta) / “Historical” Sultanahmet Meatballs Restaurant (Chef Selim) which takes its name from the historical site. Strongly recommended to pay attention to above “Business Title” as there are imitations of this brand, unluckily. Official web page: www.sultanahmetkoftesi.com/MeatBalls.html

This historical meatballs restaurant located on the tram road was decorated and expanded the shop due to huge demand. The service here starts at 11:30 in the morning, lasts until 22:30 in the evening (not in epidemic period obviously). Orders are received immediately after sitting at the table the meatballs that are being cooked are served in a short time. In winter, amber-yellow chilli pickles are also served or those who prefer piyaz or salad can enjoy such tastes. The owner says the reason meatballs are liked by everyone is because they wait and rest for a day after turning mince into meatballs.
